Hey there, fellow keyboard enthusiasts! I’m a keycaps supplier, and today I’m super stoked to take you behind the scenes and show you how double-shot keycaps are made. It’s a pretty cool process, and I think you’ll find it as fascinating as I do. Keycaps

What Are Double – Shot Keycaps?
First off, let’s quickly go over what double – shot keycaps are. If you’re into mechanical keyboards, you’ve probably heard of them. Double – shot keycaps are made by molding two different colors of plastic to create the legends (the letters, numbers, and symbols on the keys). The great thing about them is that the legends are super durable. Unlike some other keycap printing methods, the legends won’t wear off easily, even after years of heavy use.
The Materials
The main materials we use for double – shot keycaps are plastics. Usually, we go for ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) or PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate). ABS is a common choice because it’s easy to work with and has a smooth, shiny finish. It also takes on colors really well. On the other hand, PBT is more durable and has a matte texture. It’s less likely to develop that "shine" from finger oils over time, so it’s a popular option for people who want their keycaps to look good for a long time.
The Molding Process
Step 1: Designing the Molds
Before we even start making the keycaps, we need to design the molds. This is a crucial step because the quality of the molds determines the quality of the keycaps. We use computer – aided design (CAD) software to create a 3D model of the keycap. This model includes all the details, like the shape of the key, the size of the legends, and the overall dimensions.
Once the design is finalized, we send it to a mold – making machine. These machines use a process called CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining to carve the molds out of metal, usually steel or aluminum. It’s a precise process, and it can take a while to make the molds, but it’s worth it because they’ll be used to make thousands of keycaps.
Step 2: Preparing the Plastic
We need to get the plastic ready for molding. The plastic comes in small pellets, and we put them into a hopper. From there, the pellets are fed into a heated barrel. Inside the barrel, the plastic is melted down to a liquid state. The temperature is carefully controlled to make sure the plastic has the right consistency for molding.
Step 3: The First Shot
Now comes the first shot of the double – shot process. We inject the first color of plastic into the mold. This color forms the base of the keycap. The mold is designed in such a way that the areas where the legends will be are left empty. The plastic fills the rest of the mold, and then it’s allowed to cool and solidify.
Step 4: The Second Shot
After the first shot has cooled, we inject the second color of plastic into the mold. This second color fills the empty areas where the legends are supposed to be. Since the first layer of plastic has already solidified, the second color fits perfectly into the spaces, creating the legends. The two layers of plastic bond together during the molding process, and once the second shot has cooled, the keycap is almost done.
Step 5: Ejecting the Keycap
Once the keycap has fully cooled and solidified, the mold opens up, and the keycap is ejected. At this point, it might have some rough edges or extra plastic around it, which we call flash.
Post – Molding Processes
Trimming
We use a trimming machine to remove the flash from the keycap. This gives the keycap a clean, finished look. The trimming process is pretty quick, but it’s important to make sure that we don’t damage the keycap or the legends while we’re doing it.
Quality Control
We can’t just send out the keycaps without checking them first. Our quality control team inspects each keycap to make sure it meets our standards. They look for things like uneven legends, cracks, or any other defects. If a keycap doesn’t pass the inspection, it gets set aside and won’t be sold.
Packaging
Once the keycaps have passed quality control, we package them up. We usually put them in small plastic bags or boxes, depending on the customer’s order. We also include any necessary instructions or information about the keycaps.
Why Double – Shot Keycaps Are Awesome

There are a few reasons why double – shot keycaps are so popular. First of all, as I mentioned earlier, the legends are super durable. You don’t have to worry about them fading or wearing off, even if you type a lot. Second, the colors are really vibrant. Because the two colors of plastic are molded together, the legends stand out and look great. And finally, double – shot keycaps are available in a wide variety of colors and designs. Whether you want a simple set of white legends on a black base or a more elaborate design, there’s a double – shot keycap set for you.
